The two golden rules of goal setting
Have you set some goals for 2020, but feeling overwhelmed with too much to do and too little time? You try to keep up with all the work, but new tasks and responsibilities keep coming in, making it difficult to focus on your goals.
Well, it is time to belly up to the bar, because you’ve got just six more months to smash those damn goals.
I want to share the two golden rules of goal setting that I use over and over again to smash my goals, and I know without a doubt in my mind that they will help you destroy yours too.
First, I would like to ask you a question. What is the one thing that you could do every day to help you achieve that goal?
Once you know what that one thing is that you have to do every day to achieve that goal, now it is game time, and make that one thing a habit of yours so that it becomes easy to do and part of your routine. You want to have this one thing into your system and secure it into your subconscious mind so that it becomes part of who you are. The following two golden rules that I live by will help you to create new positive habits.
THE FIRST GOLDEN RULE OF GOAL SETTING
Do this one task first thing in the morning. You want to develop a routine of “doing that one thing” before you do anything else without having too much time to think about it. You want to get it done and over with first thing in the morning; otherwise, and the mind will come up with all sorts of ideas not to do it.
THE SECOND GOLDEN RULE OF GOAL SETTING
Apply the 21/90 rule. According to this rule, it takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle. If you commit to doing this one task first thing in the morning for 21 days, it will become a habit. And if you commit to doing it for 90 days, it will become part of your lifestyle.
In the book “the power of habit,” Charles Duhigg states that our brains are wired to form habits. And once something becomes a habit, a different part of our brain takes over. We begin to perform that particular habit on automatic pilot. And that is what you want. You want to have no longer think about achieving that one task. You want your brain to be free so that you can focus on other things.
Using these two golden rules, I have made it a habit of yoga, pranayama breathing, meditation, journaling, and jogging every morning before starting my day. And although it may seem like a lot, I feel super energized, ready to rumble and smash all those damn goals.
So here you have it, the two golden rules of goal setting:
- First thing in the morning
- Apply the 21/90 rule
