Here is my Simple Guide to writing to help you improve your writing skills.
Do you ever struggle with writing? You want to start writing a book, a blog, or any project but have a hard time jotting down your ideas?
This is something many of us can relate to. You feel inspired to write something. You start with lots of enthusiasm, but your enthusiasm wanes down sooner or later, and you end up writing nothing nada zero.
That is the past. Keep reading to learn how to crush writer’s block, show up for yourself, and follow through on those great inspirations.
Here’s my simple guide to writing. Please feel free to use some or all of the principles I use to guide you on your writing journey.
Have A Calm Mind
Whenever we have a big project like writing a book, it is very tempting to tell ourselves that we don’t have time for yoga, meditation, or other spiritual practices.
It is from the stillness that all great ideas and creativity arise. I used to believe that my thinking mind was making things happen. Big mistake, and I had to learn this the hard way.
So whenever you are starting any creative project, make sure you tend to your spiritual practices first and foremost, whatever helps you to calm your mind so that you can be in a state to allow the universe to flow to you and through you.
Make time for learning.
Make it a habit to learn from people, situations, circumstances, and every event. I always make sure to learn from my readers, their struggles, and wounds. Make time to read and learn from those who have walked the path before you. I read a lot, and I am always making notes.
Devote yourself to write every day
I write every day. Some days I can spend a couple of hours of writing, whereas other days, I have a lot less time. But no matter what, I sit down every day at my desk and write for at least one hour. It does not matter whether I have a specific subject I am writing about or not. I write down as a routine.
I block out for one hour, and I honor this time and space. I consider it my sacred hour. I like to write in the wee hours when it is still quiet, and the mind is still half asleep.
Sticking to this has helped me and will help you have immense clarity and complete any writing project you are working on.
Be passionate about your subject.
I have a deep interest in understanding the mind, the self, and the interconnectedness of All That Is. That is the one theme that has carried me through all these years. Again and again, I write and contemplate questions such as Who am I? Why am I here? What is it that I want in life? Where do I come from? What is the true meaning of life? I love contemplating on everyday life situations and see them from a broader perspective. I love lining up my thoughts with the universal mind.
Know your subject
Knowing your subject makes the writing flow with more ease. I spent many years studying, reading, and researching the body, mind, spirit connection before I felt comfortable even to begin sharing this knowledge. Albert Einstein beautifully stated, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”
Be authentic about your expression.
It is your unique voice. It is your story. It is your perspective. It is your point of view. It is your experience. Own it.
Use Circle Drawing
I use a technique called circle drawing. This is an excellent technique I learned from a book – writing the natural way – by Gabrielle Rico, Ph.D.
You take any idea that you have, write it down in the middle of the page, make a circle around it. From the circle’s circumference, you draw five arrows and write down the first five ideas that come to you. Then you take each of those five words and extend five arrows from them and write five statements or thoughts for every five words. Try not to think and write whatever comes to you. This is an exciting way of letting your mind flow. You started with one idea, and within no time, you have twenty-five ideas. This is how I begin every project.
