Looking for new ways to create an evening routine? Here are 5 simple steps on how to create an evening routine that works for you that makes your day END on a happy note.
Do you ever wish you could smooth sail through your evenings as smooth as you run your mornings on automatic pilot?
While many people kick some serious ass when it comes to their morning habits, the TRULY successful people know that their evening habits are equally important.
What you choose to do in your evenings is as equally important in having kickass productive days, as what you do in your mornings.
How to create an evening routine that works for you.
I am one of those who have a kickass morning routine. I wake up at 4 AM every morning, I do my yoga practice followed by breathing exercises and meditation. I journal for an hour and go for a 10K run before I even check my emails.
My breakfast is always a healthy one and I have no problem having a light healthy lunch either. But for some reason I find the evenings to be a bit tricky. I used to have a really hard time getting my act together after a day of hustle. I ate whatever was in front of me, and couldn’t sit still, let alone meditate for 5 minutes.
For the longest time I wanted to create an evening routine of listening to a little bit of wisdom, some chanting, and do a short meditation before I wrap up the day.
I would do it once or twice and then switch back to my old habits of scrolling through my Instagram posts, checking my phone yadi yadi yada, and so I wasn’t getting the kind of results I was after.
Being a routine freak, I was hoping to turn this little ritual into a habit, and take it to the next level by making it into an evening routine, and a lifestyle.
I don’t have it a 100% under my belt yet, but I am on the right track and here are the 5 steps that helped me gain control over my evening fracas and create an evening routine that is working for me.
- 1. Commitment
The first step is to commit yourself to your evening routine. I made a declaration to the Universe and wrote it down on a piece of paper that I was ready to develop an evening routine and stick to it like glue. You can say it out loud or write it down as a form of commitment, or both.
- 2. State your WHY
The second step is to be clear and state your WHY. It is very important to know what your motivation is for developing this evening routine and how it will benefit you. When you are doing something, whatever it is you are doing, it is a very good idea to spend some thinking why you are doing it. Because when your reason for doing it is super duper strong, the obstacles that come in your way won’t stop you from doing what you got to do.
Trouble happens when the reason is not strong enough, then the smallest temptation will make you forget all about your intentions. The mind has a cunning way of making up a gazillion reasons why it is OK to do what we are NOT supposed to do. But when your reason is very strong than no obstacle that is thrown your way will make you deter from your goals.
- 3. Identify a Reminder
The third step is to identify something that will get your evening routine going every single time no matter what. Be very specific and know what time of the day you will start your evening routine, and the exact location. Will you be in your bedroom, your living room or perhaps you have a meditation room? Will you start your evening routine right after work, or after dinner? Try to be very specific and very consistent. Consistency is the key!
- 4. Identify the Rewards
The fourth step is to identify what you will get out of this evening routine once it becomes part of your lifestyle. How will your sleep improve? Will you wake up in the morning with more determination and motivation? Will it help you be insanely productive the next day?
Perhaps the reward is more a sense of balance. A better focus. Or just a sense of peace and relaxation after a day of hustle, a feeling of connection with your higher self, or self love. Whatever it is know the rewards, this will help you to stay motivated and stick to your routine.
- 5. Track Your Evening Routine
The fifth step is to track your evening routine. According to the 21/90 rule it takes 21 days to develop a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle. So if you commit to doing this evening routine for 21 days it will become a habit. And if you commit to doing it for 90 days it will become part of your lifestyle.
It is good to keep track of the days you do your evening routine. Perhaps mark it on your calendar or in your planner and see how many days in a row you can make it happen without fail until it becomes automatic for you and you no longer have to think about your evening routine, it just happens, it is just part of your being, and part of who you are.
So to recap
Here are the 5 simple steps on how to create an evening routine that works for you to make your day END on a happy note.
- Commitment
- State your WHY
- Identify a Reminder
- Identify the Rewards
- Track Your Evening Routine
