Having a better understanding of the five elements of Ayurveda can help you understand Ayurveda and your world better.
As per Ayurveda, everything in the Universe is made up of the five elements of nature in different proportions. These five elements (Pancha mahabhutus) are the various manifestations of Consciousness.
The Five Elements of Ayurveda:
- Akasha – Ether (space)
- Vayu – Air (motion)
- Teja – Fire (radiant energy)
- Jala – Water (cohesiveness)
- Prithvi – Earth (mass)
Each element has its unique vibrational pattern and density.
How the Five Elements of Ayurveda came into Being
At first, the most subtle element that arose in Consciousness is space, which appears as the element known as Ether or Space.
From the element of Ether, the appearance of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth evolved.
The movement of Ether gave rise to the Air element.
Friction between the movement of Space and Air caused heat and resulted in the element of Fire.
The Fire melted down became liquid, and Water came into existence.
As the Water element coagulated, the Earth element manifested itself.
