If you want to understand your feelings better, you want to keep reading and learn about the connection between the 7 Chakras and your emotions.
The seven chakras are the main energy centers in the body, and these centers are connected to your emotions.
There is only one energy (also known as chi, prana, or life force), and this energy is continuously rising and falling. Every time you take a breath in, the energy goes up, and every time you breathe out, it goes down.
And every time the energy goes up and down, it hits specific nerve centers within your system. And when it hits a particular nerve center, it gets stimulated. It creates a sensation, and those sensations, in turn, causes you to have an emotional experience, and when you have an emotional experience, what do you do?
You associate your emotions with external things.
- “I am angry because my husband did this.”
- “I am sad because my children did this.”
We are always trying to find a reason for why we have an emotional experience.
The mind is always finding a cause.
- “I am sad because of this.”
- “I am angry because of this.”
Now every time you link your emotions to something external, what you are doing is you are creating an impression in the nervous system or a scar, known as samskara in Sanskrit.
As a result, when the energy rises and falls and hits that scar in the nervous system, the nerve centers get stimulated. That sensation causes emotions, and this whole cycle keeps going and going and going. The 7 Chakras and your emotions are intertwined.
You want to experience emotion as pure emotion. A sensation as a pure sensation without associating it with people, places, or situations.
The seven Chakras and your emotions
The First Chakra is the Base Chakra, or Muladhara, also known as the root chakra.
- Color: red
- Physical Location: The base of the spine, between the anus and genital
When the energy moves upward, there is enthusiasm; you are alert and interested in life.
When the energy is going downward, there is inertia, dullness, heaviness, and no interest in life, all you want to do is sleep or eat, heavy downward energy.
The Second Chakra is the Sacral Chakra, or Svadisthana, also known as the naval center or the sex center.
- Color: orange
- Physical location: Upper part of the sacrum below the navel
When the energy is moving upward, you experience creativity.
When the energy is moving down, you experience sexual energy or lust.
There is creative energy or procreative energy; either you are caught up in lustful experience or creativity dawns within you.
When you have an outlet of creativity, you are not thinking about sex, and when your creative channel is blocked, you feel stuck and unable to express your creativity. That is when you experience lust.
By no means am I saying that one energy is good and the other is bad. It is just that one energy is going up, and the other is going down. You feel creative when the prana is flowing up and lustfulness when the prana is moving down.
The Third Chakra is the Solar Plexus Chakra or Manipura
- Color: yellow
- Physical location: Between the navel and the bottom of the sternum
When the energy is going upward, you tend to feel joy, generosity, giving and sharing. Santa Claus and the laughing Buddha with their big bellies are great examples of joy, generosity, giving, sharing,
When the energy is moving down, you experience the opposite; greed and jealousy.
A teenage heartbreak is a classic example. Remember that feeling of nauseous, not wanting to eat, tightness in your tummy when you felt heart broken?
The Fourth Chakra is the Heart Chakra or Anahata
- Color: green
- Physical location: The heart center at the center of the chest on the sternum
There are three emotions in the heart center; love, fear, and hatred.
When the energy is moving upward, you feel love.
When the energy is moving downward, you feel fear or hatred.
When you love somebody, you are not afraid of them, and you don’t hate them. And when you are frightened, there is no love either.
You cannot experience all three simultaneously; either you are experiencing love or experiencing fear or experiencing hatred.
The Fifth Chakra is the Throat Chakra or Vishuddha
- Color: turquoise
- Physical location: Between the collar bone and the larynx in the neck
When the energy is moving upward, you feel gratitude.
When the energy is moving downward, you feel grief.
Most of us have had this experience, you feel so grateful, and you want to express your gratitude to somebody, but you can’t speak, you can’t talk, it is all caught up in the throat. When you feel sad, it also feels as if there is a rock in the throat area.
So you feel gratitude when the prana is going up and grieve when it is going down.
The Sixth Chakra is the Brow Chakra, or Ajna, also known as the Third Eye Chakra
- Color: deep blue
- Physical location: In between the eyebrow
When the energy is going upward, there is sharp alertness.
When the energy is going downward, there is anger.
An alert person focused on a project can quickly flip and get angry. Have you seen a dull person get angry?
The Seventh Chakra is the Crown Chakra: Sahasrara
- Color: violet
- Physical location: Top of the head
When the energy moves upward to the top of the head, there is Bliss.
Conclusion
So to recap the 7 chakras and your emotions;
As the energy moves from the top of your head down to the base of your spine, the emotions move from Bliss to anger to sadness, to fear, to passiveness, to sex, to dullness, and as the energy moves from the base of your spine up to the top of your head the emotions move from dullness to enthusiasm, creativity, joy, generosity, love gratitude, alertness, and Bliss.
Next time you have an emotional reaction, you can bring your attention back to yourself and observe those subtle sensations instead of hooking it to something external. Meditation is a great tool to be aware of the interrelationship between the 7 chakras and your emotions.
It is a tremendous science, not an intellectual science but an experiential science. It is the science of the movement of energy.
Every emotion and every thought is just energy, but we have to learn how to identify that energy in our system.
The secret is not to fight with any sensation that arises; just relax and let it go.
